Arthur Lander

The Lander lab focuses on how cells communicate to coordinate behaviors that underlie development, regeneration and cancer. Many of the projects in the lab take a systems biology approach to explaining biological complexity.

One project uses experimental and computational approaches to understand co-receptors—molecules that boost performance of cell surface receptors—and their roles in growth, morphogen signaling and cancer. One of these co-receptors, Glypican-1, is specifically up-regulated in pancreatic and breast cancer, and the Lander lab, in collaboration with the lab of Murray Korc at Dartmouth, has demonstrated a key role for Glypican-1 in pancreatic tumor growth and metastasis.

Another project in the lab models effects of feedback loops in multi-stage lineages in the control of proliferation and growth. This work demonstrates how highly unstable, oscillatory proliferative dynamics—such as are commonly seem in hematological malignancies—easily arise from feedback loops that are normally used to help control regeneration.
